In addition to being a compassionate and sometimes painfully honest look at Roberts's lifeher difficult childhood, her constant questioning of psychic abilities and sources of creativity, her resistance to Seth's advice, her dramatic struggles with her health. Early on, Seth, the entity who spoke through Roberts, told the two women that they were counterparts, connected in this particular lifetime to work out some shared personal issues. Carla Kelly is one of my all-time favorite writers and this one did not disappoint. Overall I really enjoyed this romance and thought it was very appealing in a more low key way than most of what I read. I think I'll have to make a point of reading more ship faring stories because there is something about them that really strikes me. Despite being a personality I usually take issue with, I really liked him. Typically the goody two shoes personality makes me cringe, but not in this case. Nana was an interesting blend of biddability (they call her “biddable” so why not biddability?), compassion and strength that I really enjoyed. ![]() ![]() However, I was quite taken by the sweet romance and likeable characters. Captain Worthy is a man who has always lived by his instincts and when he sees Nana he is immediately moved to protect her from both poverty and the unknown machinations of her underhanded father.Usually I like my romances a bit steamier and more adventurous. Oliver Worthy is Captain of the good ship Tireless and at the request of the Lord he is supposed to report to he has agreed to stay at the Mulberry to report on the state of his daughter. ![]() Now she acts as housekeeper and maid at her grandmother's inn, The Mulberry, in Portsmouth. ![]() Eleanor (Nana) is the bastard daughter of a Lord who tried to sell her off to pay his debts. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pullman compares Lyra’s fearful attraction to Mrs. Coulter as a compass needle is drawn to the Pole.” (Simile) It also foreshadows what Lord Asriel later reveals: that just as light can pass from one world to another, so too can matter. ![]() This simile hints that in the North, unknown and mysterious forces may operate in a way that is different from the world we know. Yet during Lord Asriel’s presentation about his trip to the North, the narrator compares the light of the aurora borealis to hanging curtains, which can be touched and are subject to the effects of gravity. We usually think of light as something weightless that lacks visible borders. Throughout the novel, Pullman plays with light and matter, emphasizing that these forces act in unexpected ways in different universes. “Streams and veils of light hung like curtains” (Simile) This simile highlights Lord Asriel’s two most prominent traits in Lyra’s eyes: power and danger. The narrator is describing Lord Asriel’s actions through Lyra’s eyes while Lyra hides in a closet watching him. Lions are powerful creatures often associated with nobility. Lyra has great respect for Lord Asriel, but she also fears him. ![]() ![]() Buy Study Guide "Lyra's uncle moved across to the fire and stretched his arms high above his head, yawning like a lion." (Simile) ![]() ![]() Harrington is able to accurately portray the hopes, doubts, fears and the mindset of a middle school tween. The two best friend characters, Darcy and Norah, are super cute. After two seventh graders, who are best friends, create a fake detective agency as their class project, they get a real case and decide to see it out until the end. It was a really in-depth mystery that I don’t think I would have been able to figure out on my own. It literally had me guessing until almost the very end. Harrington’s Partners in Crime really packs a lot of punch in less than two hundred pages. And I’m so glad I did! It’s fun, fast and a really great adventure. But when I discovered that Kim Harrington had written a new middle grade mystery series, I thought I would give it a chance. ![]() ![]() ![]() Honestly you guys, I never thought I would be interested in reading middle grade. ![]() ![]() If you are an occasional reader of his work, then we urge you to grab a copy asap.
